11 Navy applicants die in road accident

At least 11 youth aspiring to be soldiers, on Saturday, lost their lives in a road accident while travelling to write an examination for the Nigerian Navy in Kano.

The police said the victims, from Gagarawa Local Government Area of Jigawa, met their untimely death as their vehicle rammed into a trailer, which was parked wrongly by the road.

It was gathered that the candidates left their homes around 5:00 a.m. hoping to reach their destination on time for the exam.

The Nigerian Navy Aptitude Test for the 2020 recruitment exercise takes place today at 30 centres across the nation.

A resident, Abba Muhammad, identified the deceased persons as Auwalu Mohammed; Mutari Sule; Ibrahim Sani; Katimu Muhammad; Dauda Salisu; Musbahu Yakubu, Rabiu Muhammad-Ado; Salim Muhammad-sani; Akibu Ubali-sale; and Murtala Salisu, while another, who died in the hospital, is yet to be identified.

Muhammad, whose brother was among the victims, told PREMIUM TIMES that reckless driving and nonchalant attitude of the state’s authorities to administer punishment on reckless drivers was responsible for the reoccurring crash on the Gagarawa-Kano Highway.

Spokesperson of the Jigawa State Police Command, Audu Jinjiri, said the accident involved a commercial Golf 3 wagon, with registration number AA 320 TAR, Jigawa, which was conveying twelve passengers to Kano.

The driver, Auwalu Muhammad, 30, was driving from Gagarawa Local Government to Kano with the said passengers. On reaching ‘Abdullahi Masallaci’ rammed into stationed DAF truck, Jinjiri said.

The truck, with registration number DUT 201, Jigawa was parked by one Aminu Hassan, 25, of Mallamadori Local Government Area of Jigawa, after developing a mechanical fault.

“The truck was parked and occupied almost half of an incoming lane, as a result, ten persons including the driver, lost their lives on the spot, while two others are responding to treatment. One other victim later died in the hospital and all corpses (are) released to relatives for burial,” he explained.

The spokesperson said the driver of the truck has been arrested and would be prosecuted soon.

Black Thursday: Heavy Truck Ran Into School Bus, Kills Some Igbo Students In Enugu State

This is actually a heart breaking report as a heavy truck reportedly ran into school bus and kills almost all of the students in Enugu state.

Actually, Enugu State is a state in southeastern Nigeria. Its capital and largest city is Enugu, from which the state derives its name.

Just recently, a report came that a truck ran into a school bus in Enugu state and killed many students that were inside the bus.

According to the reports, the incident actually happened at Awgu, Enugu.

Awgu is a Local Government Area (LGA) in Enugu State. It’s among the popular and most known cities in the state.

What actually caused the accident was not yet disclosed.

Four die, 12 injured on Lagos-Ibadan expressway accident

Four persons were confirmed dead, while 12 others sustained various degrees of injuries in a lone accident, involving a Mazda bus around Isara bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, Spokesperson, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Monday

Akinbiyi said that the accident, which occurred at about 2:20pm, was caused by a tyre burst while on high speed, resulting in the bus somersaulting.

He said that 16 people, made up of three male adults, eight female adults and five male children, were involved in the accident.

Akinbiyi said that four people died on the spot and their corpses have been deposited at the FOS morgue.

“We learnt the commercial bus, loaded with 16 passengers, including the driver, was on transit from Lagos to Ibadan when the rear tyre burst due to speeding.

” Four passengers died on the spot, made up of a five-year-old boy, two male adults and one female adult,” he said.

He added that the injured were taken to Idera Hospital, Sagamu and Victory Hospital, Ogere Remo, while the deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara Remo.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased, he called on motorists to avoid excessive speeding.


Scores missing as truck plunges into river in Lagos

Scores of persons have been declared missing after a truck conveying sand, fell off the Berger bridge into the Epe river in Lagos State on Friday night September 25.

In a statement released today September 25, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA said the number of persons in the truck was unknown and that efforts are being made to rescue who plunged into the river. The statement reads

”The Agency received information late last night of an accident involving a Volvo tipper that fell off the Berger bridge at Epe into the Epe river.

Upon arrival at the scene of incident, it was discovered that the six (6) Tyre Truck was loaded with Sand

And the number of people in the truck was unknown. Since the early hours of the morning, a combined team of Agency responders, Marine Rescue Unit, Nigeria Police and Local Divers have been carrying out Search and Rescue No deaths or casualties confirmed yet”

The accident, which involved a white-coloured Hiace bus number plates EDA28XA, occurred around 10 a.m on Thurday.

It has been reported that no less than eleven persons travelling for a funeral ceremony have died in a ghastly motor accident in Cross River State.

Two other people are said to be critically injured in the accident.

According to an eyewitness, the crash was caused by brake failure while the vehicle was on high speed. Another witness, Albert Asuquo, who helped in the rescue operation, said that the injured passengers were taken to the General Hospital in Akamkpa alongside the corpses.

A neighbour of the some of the deceased persons who gave his name as Mr. Effiong, said they were in a chartered bus going to a burial of another neighbour who passed away.

“I know some of them very well, they are my neighbours and we stay in the same place . Someone in the neighborhood died and they were going for the burial. It was a chartered vehicle for the burial. May their souls rest in peace.” 
He said.

36 feared killed in road mishap in Ebonyi

No fewer than 36 persons have died in a road accident along Akaeze-Ishiagu highway in Akaeze Development Centre, Ivo local government area of Ebonyi state.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Friday at about 5:45pm.

A witness told our correspondent that the accident occurred when an Enugu –bound 608 bus conveying people returning from a burial ceremony in Ebonyi state attempted to overtake a trailer just before a bridge in the area .

The driver of the bus was said to have lost control of the vehicle and veered off into the river and got submerged immediately.

As at the time of filing this report, only five persons in critical conditions had been reportedly found and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

‘’An accident just occurred at Akaeze Development Centre. A 608 bus carrying 36 persons returning from a burial in Ebonyi heading to Enugu while trying to overtake a trailer, the driver lost control and the bus jumped into the river .Up till now, more than 20 minutes after the incident none of them has been found’’ the source said.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Ebonyi Command of the Nigeria Police DSP Loveth Odah, confirmed the incident to our correspondent ,describing it as ‘very unfortunate incident ‘

She however disclosed that about five persons had so far been rescued from the river, adding that efforts were on to rescue others.

”It is a very unfortunate incident. The DPO of the area just told me that about five persons have been rescued and rushed to the hospital while efforts were on to see if some other persons can be rescued too. Our men are already on ground to see what can be done to help the situation” Odah said.

As many as eight people are feared dead after their vehicle plunged into a river in Kware local government area of Sokoto state.

According to Daily Trust, it was gathered that the incident occurred around 12noon on Thursday but neither their bodies nor the vehicle was recovered as at the time of filing this report around 3 pm on Friday.

It was said that seven passengers were on board the vehicle which was said to be heading to Illela local government areas before the incident.

Another account said that the vehicle hit a motorcyclist who is believed to be among the missing victims.

The Director, Relief, and Rehabilitation of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mustapha Umar who confirmed the incident said search was still on to recover their bodies and the vehicle.

“We don’t know the exact number of people involved and the type of the vehicle, because we couldn’t get somebody who was there when the incident happened.

” But the local divers hired were able to locate the position of the vehicle in the river and they said it was a small vehicle that could contain seven people, including the driver.

“As I am talking to you, search is still on to recover their bodies, and a crane is sent to bring out the vehicle from the river,”
 he said

The spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency, Aliyu Muhammad also confirmed the incident, saying their men were still on ground for search and rescue mission.

“Until we establish the number of people on board, we cannot tell you the number of dead, because we confirmed from the motor park in the area that none of their vehicles was involved in any accident on that day, meaning the vehicle did not take off from the garage,”
 he said

PHOTOS: Passengers escape death as bus tumbles on Third Mainland Bridge

It was providence that saved all the passengers of a commercial bus coming from Ibadan, Oyo State, into Lagos State in the afternoon of Thursday, September 17, when the bus they were travelling in tumbled on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The bus, painted in the colour of Oyo State commercial vehicles of white and green and with number plate AGL 855 YA, was said to have left Ibadan and was heading towards Obalende area of Lagos when the driver lost control of the vehixle, making it to tumble at the UNILAG Waterfront area inwards Adekunle around 4.00 p.m.

It was gathered that the driver of the vehicle was on top speed when the vehicle, apparently due to burst tyre, lost control and the rail on the bridge prevented it from plunging into the lagoon.

According to the Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA) which announced the lone accident on its Twitter handle @followlastma on Thursday afternoon, all the passengers in the vehicle sustained varying degrees of injuries but there was no death.

The injured passengers were promptly treated of their injuries by the mobile ambulance of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) while those who sustained injuries that needed to be treated in the hospital were taken away from the scene by the ambulance.

The passengers were eventually put in another vehicle for the completion of their journey.

According to the statement by LASTMA: “Lone accident involving a bus on Third Mainland Bridge at Unilag Waterfront inward Adekunle with casualties attended to by @followlasema ambulance.

 “The vehicle has just been evacuated by our tow truck.”
